When it comes to shoes, the great divide that separates the sexes is steadily shrinking. I’ve known men with heartier shoe fetishes than some of the most fashionable women I know. I’ve also know men who still can’t seem to grasp that black socks with brown sandals are a highly incongruous match. (And I’m not just referring to my grandfather.) Shoes say a lot about a person. In fact, when I find someone potentially attractive, my first instinct is to look at their face, then their shoes. If the face works but the shoes are off, a colossal amount of points are lost.  However if the shoes work, perhaps even have an element of style, the effects can be quite redeeming even if you aren’t the most exceptional looking cat on the block.

I’ve never been much of a jewellery guy.  In my university days I used to walk around with some face metal in the form of an eyebrow piercing and some earrings, and I occasionally wore some sort of beaded hemp necklaces, bought from a Caribbean vendor while on spring break.  Then one day I looked in the mirror and thought “What on earth am I thinking?”  The day I got rid of my face metal was the day my 4-year old cousin told me that I “grew up.”
